Who We Are
Coast 2 Coast Weighing is a family-operated business based in Thornlands.
Having travelled extensively around Australia with our own vehicle and caravan, we understand firsthand how important it is to know the true weight of your complete setup. During our own travels, we experienced challenges with overall weight, payload and axle loading, which showed us how easily a vehicle or caravan can become overloaded or unevenly loaded.
That experience inspired us to help other caravan, trailer, 4WD and commercial vehicle owners better understand their weights before heading onto the road.

We understand that vehicle and caravan weight limits can be confusing. That is why we explain your individual wheel weights, axle loads, overall weights, remaining payload and weight distribution in easy-to-understand language.

Understanding Your Weight Measurements
ATM — Aggregate Trailer Mass
The maximum permitted weight of a fully loaded caravan or trailer when it is unhitched from the tow vehicle. ATM includes the weight carried by the caravan wheels and the jockey wheel or coupling.
GVM — Gross Vehicle Mass
The maximum permitted operating weight of the fully loaded vehicle. This includes passengers, fuel, accessories, luggage, cargo and the weight transferred to the vehicle by the connected caravan or trailer.
GCM — Gross Combination Mass
The maximum permitted combined weight of the loaded tow vehicle and loaded caravan or trailer. GCM is set by the vehicle manufacturer and may be less than the vehicle’s GVM and caravan’s ATM added together.
TBM — Tow Ball Mass
The downward force applied by the caravan or trailer coupling to the tow vehicle’s tow ball. TBM is also commonly referred to as tow ball weight or tow ball download.
Tow Ball Weight Transfer
When a caravan is connected, the tow ball load acts behind the tow vehicle’s rear axle. This adds weight to the rear axle and can remove weight from the front axle. Measuring the vehicle both connected and disconnected helps show how much front-axle weight has been transferred.
GTM — Gross Trailer Mass
The maximum permitted weight carried by the caravan or trailer wheels while it is connected to the tow vehicle. GTM does not include the weight supported by the tow ball.
Individual Wheel Weights
The actual load carried by each individual wheel. Measuring each wheel separately can identify uneven side-to-side loading that may not be visible from axle totals alone.
Axle Weights
The combined weight carried by the wheels on each axle. Axle weights are compared with the manufacturer’s front, rear or trailer axle limits.
Axle Load Limits
The maximum permitted weight on each vehicle or trailer axle. A vehicle can remain within its overall GVM or ATM while still exceeding an individual axle limit.
Tare Mass
The manufacturer’s recorded unladen mass of the vehicle, caravan or trailer under the conditions specified for that tare measurement. It generally does not include passengers, personal belongings, water, food or other touring payload.
Payload
The weight available for passengers, accessories, fuel, water, luggage, tools, food and other equipment. Nominal payload is generally calculated by subtracting tare mass from the applicable maximum permitted mass.
